Pushchair Buying Guide
Buying your baby items is a very exciting time, but there is so much choice and many different options that it can be quite daunting, especially when considering larger purchases like a pram or pushchair. Below are some explanations of the types available and some lifestyle and living circumstances which could influence your choice.
Travel Systems:- These come complete with an infant carrier (car seat) which can be attached
securely to your wheels so you can take baby from the car into the shops without the need to move them into the actual pram/pushchair. This is a good option if you use the car a lot and is ideal for tiny babies as they often sleep in the car and you don’t want to disturb them!
Strollers / Buggies:- The most transportable and lightweight option which fold easily for ease of travel and storage and many models have a lie back function so are suitable for small babies. If you use public transport a lot, have limited storage space at home or have stairs up to your house this could be a good option.
2 in 1 Pushchairs: A combination of the traditional pram lie flat function and the reclining feature and versatility of a pushchair. Many models have a reversible seat unit which can face forwards or towards you. Some models also offer an optional car seat or carry cot which can be fitted to the frame effectively giving you the features of a travel system. This has the advantage of allowing you to add the optional items at a later date.
Three Wheelers: These models give excellent maneuverability and are easy to push. Again there are some models which include a car seat and others which have a carry cot allowing baby to lie flat and face you. If you enjoy long walks in either town or countryside particularly where the terrain is rough or uneven this would be the option best suited to you.
If you are lucky enough to have twins or have two children of different ages there are two options especially for you :
Twin Pushchair: These have side by side seats with individual adjustments which make them most suitable for twins and can be used for children of different ages.
Tandem Pushchair: These have have two seats one behind the other each with
individual adjustment. The rear seat reclines fully so making the pushchair suitable for a baby as well as two children of different ages. If you regularly walk on busy or narrow pavements you may find this style more suited as it is narrower.
Some General considerations (all types)
Ensure that the dimensions of the item you are thinking of purchasing are such that you can comfortably get it through the doors in your house or up any stairs. It is also important to make sure you have sufficient room to store it both at home and in the car boot.
The weight of your pushchair is also important particularly if you are constantly walking up stairs or using public transport.
You should also ensure the handles are at a comfortable height for pushing, some models have adjustable handles.
If you require space for carrying a lot shopping then you should ensure the option you choose has a large shopping basket.
Consider what accessories you will need such as blankets, rainproof covers, a parasol, cosy-toes, clip on toys etc. Some models may seem more expensive but offer some of these items in the price so making them more cost effective.
